WHITENESS is an issue that many are afraid of addressing as if someone was forcing you to touch a cactus.
Terra Incognita Media wants to provide a multitude of opportunities to engage in dialogue about whiteness. We begin our "Deconstructing Whiteness" discussions with a listening party. The group sits together and listens to the introduction and first part of the podcast series called, “Seeing White” by John Biewan, with special guest Chenjerai Kumanyika. Of course, individuals can listen at home, but we find by listening to it together in the same space that the material is fresh and our minds can sink in. This podcast addresses whiteness in the United States and how it came to be – how race came to be constructed. There are 14 episodes that conclude with the idea of transformation.
Terra Incognita organizes discussion groups so that people can sit in the discomfort of these topics together and work things out that they may not have a chance to work out in daily life. One of the primary things keeping us from having these important conversations is our discomfort. But to go forward we have to get uncomfortable. Growth requires it! Terra Incognita provides the space and structure to encourage this! Participants have the option to be as vulnerable as they want, or just listen, absorb, and learn. We are all in this together.
