Seeking Co-Founders

Terra Incognita Media is an feminist nonprofit media organization on a mission to provide an intersectional feminist response to the outdoor industry. We seek to raise the level and depth of discourse happening in the outdoor industry. We prioritize women, femme, queer, trans, POC, and Indigenous voices in order to highlight the complexity of our relationship with natural spaces.

Founded in 2015, Terra Incognita Media is steadily becoming a reliable source for feminist analysis in the outdoor industry. Terra Incognita Media has been in print, online at Terraincognitamedia.com, and on the air with our podcast.

Terra Incognita Media is more than a media outlet—we strive to instigate meaningful discourse that leads off the page and catalyzes political action and movement building. The collective strength of our reader-driven community drives our content. We are a refreshing and affirming voice in contemporary feminism, one that refuses to shy away from the complexities and intricacies of our contradictory world. We embrace the discomfort of difficult conversations because in our white supremacist patriarchal nation we cannot afford to sweep issues under the rug. Terra Incognita Media aims to have a broad reach around the globe. To make truly independent, intersectional feminist media we stand by our value of being independently funded by our readers and membership-based subscriptions.

We are currently seeking to fill two co-founder positions to start in March 2019. Our headquarters are in Portland, Oregon, but we highly encourage applicants from all geographic areas to apply. This position can be remote and will remain open until filled.

Erin Monahan, the founder of Terra Incognita Media, is a cis white woman who is seeking two candidates with a shared passion for creating inclusive, intersectional feminist media for the outdoor industry. The chosen candidates would assume founding board positions that evolve into paid staff positions. These positions would be sharing the responsibility of the “start-up” of Terra Incognita Media, and the long-term risk and opportunities associated with starting an independent non-profit company. Applicants must be highly driven and motivated.

Co-founders bear responsibility for all executive, strategic, programmatic, financial, and management functions of Terra Incognita Media. Co-founders will be responsible for building a board of directors. Co-founders serve as passionate, visionary leaders for the organization whose primary charge is to uphold and articulate Terra Incognita Media’s mission and vision to both internal and external audiences.

The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

1. Establishing strategic and programmatic direction for the organization.

  • Create and execute strategic plans in partnership with the Board of Directors

  • Execute a successful and diversified fundraising strategy to grow the organization with the participation supported by key staff and Board of Directors

  • Cultivate and deepen relationships with individual donors

  • Manage organizational efficiency and strengthen infrastructure for growth

  • Identify future program directions, new opportunities, and innovative strategies to serve Terra Incognita Media’s mission

2. Strengthening Terra Incognita Media’s leadership position in the feminist media movement.

  • Forge collaborative partnerships in the feminist media movement, building and maintaining relationships with media, feminist and social justice leaders

  • Raise the profile, reputation, and visibility of Terra Incognita Media

  • Serve as the public face of the organization by attending conferences and participating in speaking engagements

3. Providing effective management, guidance, and mentoring to empower a dedicated team of staff.

  • Inspire and motivate staff and volunteers to be creative and innovative; support them to explore new and different approaches and resources.

  • Foster an organizational culture that celebrates success, honors diversity, strives for excellence, focuses on sustainable growth, seeks continuous improvement, and learns from mistakes.

4. Recruits, schedules, and oversees contract copy editors and proofreaders who uphold the magazine’s quality of work by ensuring there are no errors.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience working with media, social justice, activist, philanthropic, or political organizations, print-magazine editing experience, adept copy editor and fact checker

  • Excellent, time management, project management, and planning skills, stickler for implementing and meeting deadlines, demonstrated understanding of media landscape and climate

  • Ability to fundraise and garner nonprofit financial support

  • Demonstrated ability to lead onsite as well as virtual/remote teams, commitment to working collaboratively with Board of Directors

  • Know the ins-and-outs of content management and organizational systems

  • Excellent oral and written communications as well as presentation skills
