Terra Incognita Media is a feminist nonprofit media organization on a mission to provide a feminist response to the outdoor industry. We seek to raise the level and depth of discourse happening in the outdoor industry. We prioritize women, femme, queer, trans, POC, and Indigenous voices in order to highlight the complexity of our relationship with natural spaces.
Founded in 2015, Terra Incognita Media is steadily becoming a reliable source for feminist analysis in the outdoor industry. Terra Incognita Media has been in print, online at Terraincognitamedia.com, and on the air with our podcast.
Terra Incognita Media is more than a media outlet—we strive to instigate meaningful discourse that leads off the page and catalyzes political action and movement building. The collective strength of our community drives our content. We are a refreshing and affirming voice in contemporary feminism, one that refuses to shy away from the complexities and intricacies of our contradictory world. We embrace the discomfort of difficult conversations because in our white supremacist patriarchal nation we cannot afford to sweep issues under the rug. Terra Incognita Media aims to have a broad reach around the globe. To make truly independent, intersectional feminist media we stand by our value of being independently funded by our readers and membership-based subscriptions.
My name is Erin Monahan, and I am the founder of Terra Incognita Media. I am currently seeking to fill two co-founding/co-conspirator positions to start as soon as possible! My “headquarters” are in Portland, Oregon, but I highly encourage applicants from all geographic areas to apply. This position can be remote and will remain open until filled.
I’m a cis white woman who is seeking two candidates with a shared passion for creating inclusive, intersectional feminist media for the outdoor industry. I understand that as a white woman who resides on this land as a settler that the risks I face with starting this platform are not the same as everyone else’s who decide to take on this work alongside me due to how systemic, institutional, and individual oppression works in our settler-colonial society. While the chosen co-founders/co-conspirators would assume founding board positions that evolve into paid staff positions, I want to acknowledge that the initial and ongoing costs of this work will have a varying impact on who is involved. I aim to hold myself accountable for how I show up as a cis white woman, and very much want to acknowledge that in order to do this work with integrity relationships are crucial, which take trust and time.
As co-founders/co-conspirators I envision us working side by side, sharing ideas, strategies, approaches, styles, and skills towards the goal of building Terra Incognita Media into a thriving, sustainable online and print publication, a podcast, a film production company/festival, as well as a producer of anti-oppressive events and workshops. Together, we will share the responsibility of the “start-up” of Terra Incognita Media, and the long-term risk and opportunities associated with starting an independent non-profit company.
I am highly driven to create an inclusive platform not just in content produced, but as well as relationships built behind the scenes. A relationship-based work culture is priority.
